"Orienteering is the international sport of navigation with a map and compass. It's easy to learn and an ever-challenging, fun way to exercise both mind and body while enjoying the natural world. Orienteering is a sport for everyone, regardless of age or experience, and beginners are always welcome."
This is the definition from Orienteering USA the governing body of the sport (yes I said sport) of Orienteering. It has been well documented the ever growing sedentary lifestyle teen develop compared to 10, 15 and 20 years ago. In fact, studies have shown that this may be the first generation where parents outlive their kids. One goal of 7th Grade PE is to introduce the students to various and sometimes unique activities. Frisbee, leisure games and weight training are all activities that are outside the social norm. Orienteering or map and compass is no different.
This unit is designed to test the kids mentally while allowing them to explore the outdoors learning the basics of direction and map reading. Please check out the video below produced by Orienteering USA and get fired up for some EXPLORATION!
